After enjoying years of reading newspapers online at no charge, theres a trend now for papers to recoup some of their lost revenues from advertising and circulation by charging subscription fees in order to get full view of the content, rather than just story summaries.
More than 300 papers have the paywall in effect, yet with mixed results. Some have lost huge percentages of traffic to their sites and some have had great success. Big-market papers seem to have the most success; conversely, smaller markets have a tougher time with the acceptance of having to go from free to fee.
